Day 3 of return: Wichita to Liberal. At last! The weather is sunny, and I stop for pictures. This is the stretch where I had been impressed with the scenery five years earlier.

Toto, are you sure we're back in Kansas?
The way I remember, it was in black and white.

Idyllic scene, right? Adventures, however, never cease. See where my bike was parked? As near the edge as I could place it, and this was a nice, wide, paved shoulder. (Perspective foreshortens it somewhat in the picture. It was about six feet wide.)

So I'm standing there beside the bike, with my back to the road, when there's a mighty rumbling behind me. Drat, that truck sure didn't see fit to yield much of the lane. Casually looking to my left, I see what went by. It was a wide load. A house, no less. I think it had been driving with a little of the parlor hanging over the shoulder!
